Summary
“N-Niles?” Connor wipes his eyes with the back of his sleeve. He pulls away to get a better look at his brother.
“Would you like me to register ‘Niles’ as my name?” It’s only when Connor is inches away that he notices the details. Niles isn’t Niles at all. His mouth is slack and his eyes are devoid of emotion. His skin is unblemished, lacking the white scar on the real Niles’ chin from a parkour incident. The most blatant red flag is the circle LED light on the side of his forehead. It twirls between phases of red and yellow. The real Niles is still 6 feet underground. This imposter is just a robot wearing his brother’s face like a mask.

He should have known better than to trust Connor and his stupidly charming grin. Sixty shivers when he feels something move under the blanket. Hidden, Connor’s hand wanders past his knee, toeing along some freckles and rubbing his thigh. On the chair to their right is Nines. He’s sitting back with his arms neat in his lap, watching the movie, oblivious to everything else. Tonight they were supposed to enjoy some bonding. Nothing else. But it seems Connor has other plans.

Without thinking, Hank selects a bottle of whiskey off the shelf and pops the lid using a tool he found on the nearby shelf. He throws his head back and swallows down half of it, a feat that is both impressive and worrying. Gavin avoids eye contact, suddenly coming to the creeping realization that he fucked up big time. Hank grabs him by the hair and bends him over a pile of crates. Startled, Gavin falls onto his forearms, his legs parting slightly as Hank stands between them. Gavin’s breathing halts and he stops for a moment and closes his eyes, too shocked to do anything else. Hank digs his face into the rough wood grain and whispers into his ear, “I’ll show you who’s the slut,”

A loud rumble overtakes the entire area followed by the screeching of large metal plates opening up in the floor. Vines and weeds are torn up and flung across the room as mechanical parts dig their way out like zombies. Connor and Sixty watch frozen with horror, yet enthralled by the sight. Cogs, pulleys, roller chains, pistons, and pumps are tangled together in a solid monstrous shape. Thick cables weave to become stronger and stronger, clawed hands forming out of hooks and sharpened metal. The thing convulses, and in slow, jerking motions its hand rises up and reaches out to touch Sixty’s face, caressing it so gently that his synthetic skin peels back.
