To the right, there was no one. To the left, no one. So, Venti used his very last resort.
Reaching over the counter, he took Xiao's hand into his, pulled him uncomfortably close, and grinned.
“He’s right here,” he lied. “Xiao’s my boyfriend.”
…
“Huh?”
They had an agreement: for six months, Xiao would pretend to be Venti’s boyfriend to get a stalker off his back. In return, Venti would grant him any favor he wanted—no questions asked. Once their time was up, they’d part ways and never speak again.
It was supposed to be no strings attached. But with every day spent “pretending” with Xiao, Venti could feel his resolve slipping.
Was he in over his head? Definitely. But a little fun never hurt anybody…

For the longest time, Xiao is alright. Everything is alright.
Except when it’s not, most of the time. But that’s the norm, the usual. The price the Vigilant Yaksha accepted and that comes with his duties.Xiao became used to listening to Barbato's music from afar, rarely allowing anything further throughout the millennia. He tries not to overthink why the divine tunes saved him, or if he was even worthy of it. It’s alright too, he doesn’t have to know, it’s for the best to limit such unattainable desires.
Until it all changes when Venti decides to weave his presence into Xiao’s life, not as a god, but as a dear company, a contrast to the shadows. For once, Xiao allows something good to bloom inside of him.
