Mike paused stiffly.
Raglan’s face spread open in a grin. “Come on, sit down. Sit, sit, sit, sit, sit.” He gestured animatedly at Mike’s vacant seat as though he was welcoming him into the office for the first time.
Mike sighed and complied. “Okay, uh, well - what is it?”
“It’s a security gig.” Raglan’s silver eyes gleamed. “Full disclosure: it’s not great. Right? High turnover. That’s what we call it in the business, but you get to be your own boss. Sort of.”
Penny was going to murder him. Mike nodded slowly as Raglan went on.
“And you only have to worry about one thing!” Raglan said enthusiastically. “Keeping people out. And, you know, keep the place tidy.”
“That’s two things.”

Summary
The ‘muses’ were standing on the stage, frozen in their performance stances - Freddy with his microphone, Bonnie with his guitar, Chica with her cupcake, Foxy with his hook. Their messily-drawn portraits were all over the wall, depicting them in various fantastical locations. She glanced over at the real ones now - sullied and stained, far past their prime. It was strange. She imagined it as if it were yesterday when they were new and modish, when kids flocked to watch them perform. Vanessa had loved them. She’d loved them just like she’d loved him.

A boy her age wavered before her, looking like a smudge of crimson in some sort of tailored suit. A school uniform, maybe? He was tall and sinuous, with a crown of curly pale hair and icy blue eyes. He gave a charmingly-practiced smile, and leaned forward as though welcoming her to a prestigious dinner party. He was sweet, that was all. In any other circumstance, Lucy Gray might have smiled, asked him for a dance. He was either completely out of his mind or completely lost, but both were endearing. Still, she was put on edge when he extracted a pristine white rose from his pocket and offered it to her.
“Welcome to the Capitol.” His voice was silvery, like a snake.

Wylan turned away again. The sea sprawled out around him. He wished that they were here under different circumstances. Onward to Novyi Zem, maybe. He imagined standing by Jesper on the prow of a ship, his head on his boyfriend’s shoulder. He imagined Jesper holding his hand. He imagined meeting Jesper’s father and sketching Jesper’s face and collecting cherry tree petals with him. Not feeling Jesper’s burning gaze lancing through him, unable to tell him the truth. “I can’t,” he said quietly. Tears pricked his eyes. “I can’t do it.” He whipped around. “We can start over. I’ll do anything. Everything can be perfect. Just please don’t leave me.”
After Wylan is revealed as a Van Eck, his relationship with Jesper has fallen into disrepair. One night aboard the Ferolind, he tries to fix the damage caused.
