This is a continuation of a series that I wrote altering the timeline of the Birds of Prey Television Series after the Three Birds and a Baby episode.
It is recommended that you read my first two fics in this series, Birds of Prey: Love and Betrayal and Birds of Prey: No Kill Policy, before reading this story. -

Summary
NCIS: Hawai'i suffered from something every television show suffers from - time constraints. Episodes are only about 40 minutes long to account for the insertion of commercials. Lots of stuff gets left on the cutting room floor, such as much of the scene between Kate and Lucy at Kate's condo. There are things I felt that the pilot episode left out that would have added more depth to the characters and the story as a whole. So, I have decided to create an extended cut, featuring some added scenes and some reimagined ones that I feel might have made the pilot episode better. Enjoy!

“Lucy, this assignment is for god knows how long. He’s so young!”“This is for him,” the reply, disconnected, emotionless. “This protects him. From the world…and from a mother that can’t love him.”
The sentence had rendered Kate unable to move, frozen as the pieces had finally fallen in place, as the door had closed behind NCIS Special Agent Lucy Tara for the last time, leaving Kate with the sentence that would haunt her for the next eight years.
“-a mother who can’t love him.”

Summary
The first time Kate saw the scrapbook was after they moved in together. They’d just had Lucy’s goodbye party before she went on the big boat two days before, and Lucy was set to leave the next day. Instead of finishing up her packing - she insisted she didn’t need more than her usual backpack of things; Kate emphatically disagreed - Lucy printed out some pictures, pulled out the scrapbook, and started pasting the pictures in it.
“You need a backup toothbrush - wait, what’s that?” Kate asked as she noticed the arts and crafts happening on her dining table.
“A scrapbook,” Lucy said languidly.
Kate doesn't fully get Lucy's scrapbooking hobby, not until there's an accident.

Summary
The start of the mystery that would plague Kate for the next several months was a package that came to Lucy at work instead of their apartment.
Kai dropped it onto Lucy’s desk right as Kate walked up to them to take Lucy out to lunch.
“Hey, what’s that?” she asked. “Is it a case thing? Need any help?”
She’d never seen Lucy move so fast in her life, the package immediately disappearing into a drawer that Lucy slammed shut so hard her desk shook.
In which Lucy is keeping a secret, Kate knows the secret, Lucy knows she knows the secret but still won't admit it, and Kate goes a little nuts trying to get her to admit it. Also, there's sweaters and knitting and romance.

Then, as it always seems to go, time speeds up. Suddenly there is not enough time because Lucy’s shirt is turning red. It takes Kate’s mind a minute to catch up: the loud sound that ripped apart the afternoon; the stain blooming on Lucy’s shirt. Gunshot.

Summary
Lucy knows things are moving too quickly; she just handed over everything that identifies her as Lucy Tara. But Whistler is right. They have a chance to get inside the Kāno camp and she can do it. She knows motorcycles - rebellion is many things and some of Lucy’s involved big engines. But she’s also good with people, she always has been. And even if she got off on the wrong foot with Mateo, there’s nothing saying that’s how it has to stay that way.
“Lucy,” Tennant says, catching her attention again. “We don’t know how long this will take. It could be weeks. It could be months. This is a commitment and you need to take that into consideration before you agree to this.”
Lucy takes a deep breath in. “I think I can do it.”
