Мальчик кутался в старое одеяло, которое когда-то принадлежало его кузену — Дадли, но тот слишком быстро из него вырос (и далеко не в высоту), и поэтому оно ему не было необходимо. Он едва сдерживал слезы: от боли, от несправедливости, от желания в утешении хотя бы кого-нибудь. Дверца его чулана отворилась с едва слышным скрипом, и перед ним предстала высокая женщина. Она чуть ниже Петуньи, но и не такая худая, как его тетя. Из-за слез и своего плохого зрения, которое родственники не хотели исправлять в никакую, мальчик едва мог разглядеть лицо женщины, но от нее пахло чем-то горьким и душистым, словно мыло из настоящих трав. Однажды мальчик видел фотографию кудрявой девочки в комнате своей тети и мысленно решил, не решаясь спрашивать у родственников, что это его мама. Женщина перед ним имела такую же пышную прическу, правда, цвет из-за плохого освещения, а точнее его полного отсутствия, он не мог рассмотреть.
— Вы моя мама? — прошептал ребенок, икая от переполняющих его эмоций.
