Kaveh's mouth fell slightly open, rage brewing in his stomach and climbing up his chest for what felt like the millionth time that day.
"Sorry, was I in your way? I just felt a little exasperated when I realized that my keys were in your pocket instead of mine and didn't think of where it would be best to sit and wait for you to arrive. Please, tell me where and how you'd like me best for next time."
"So it's my fault that you forgot to grab them off the rack before you left?" Alhaitham then hit his palm with his fist, feigning bewilderment.
"Actually, no, you're right. That one's on me. Assuming you're a responsible adult who knows how to take care of himself is a mistake I often make."
"Right, because you're perfect and you never forget about anything!"
(In which Alhaitham becomes Acting Grand Sage and it complicates things between him and Kaveh.)

Summary
Alhaitham is now the acting grand sage of the Akademiya. Kaveh is a rather hot merman who reunites him with his beloved noise cancelling headphones when they fall off the harbour at Sumeru. But even with proof right in front of him, will Alhaitham believe what he's seen or just put it down to a stress induced hallucination from working too much?

His junior comes right up behind him as he pauses, his tone suddenly softer. “You’re angry with me.”
“Of course I’m angry!” Kaveh spins around on heel and forced himself to stare up at his roommate, barely able to keep the tremble out of his lip. “We had plans and you just…tossed them aside. Without so much as asking me!”
Alhaitham’s brows pinch together as he stares Kaveh down, as if trying to decipher a puzzle. “You could have just come with us-”
“That’s not the point!” He’s far too drunk for this. It’s getting harder and harder to fight back the sting in his eyes and the tight squeeze in his chest. “I just…I need to go to bed. We can talk about this later.”

Kaveh's carried a torch for Alhaitham pretty much since the first day they met. It's obvious to everyone but the Grand Sage himself, but Kaveh isn't ready to put himself out there and risk being shut down.
Turns out keeping his feelings to himself ends up hurting a lot more than he expected.
In which Kaveh gaslights himself (a lot), Alhaitham's bad at feelings, Cyno's jokes are terrible, and Tighnari's just trying his best.
