Eddie cannot tell you why, except that sometimes his body makes a choice before his brain has caught up. He is at the third teller window before he has even examined the move, and then he looks up and sees her.
He gets a handful of seconds where she does not know she is being watched.
Something in him goes tight.
Not the clean, useful kind of attention he brings into rooms. Not the quiet click of recognition he has learned to trust. This is different. This is his mind, uninvited, throwing a rope around her and yanking.
Her in a white dress in low light, simple and close, small crowd, his hand finding hers like it has always known where to go.
Her laughter against his throat in the dark.
A kitchen table. Two mugs. Her bare feet hooked around his ankle under the chair.
Her asleep against his side, his arm heavy over her ribs like a promise.
Then it is gone.
Less than a second. No time at all. He is still standing in Hawkins First National at 9:47 a.m. on a Wednesday in October, and she still has not looked up.
