He might be a better man than he used to think, but he’s certainly not as good as Byleth thinks he is, because whether Sylvain deserves him or not, he isn’t going to let Byleth go.
He does, of course, let him go in the literal sense so that he can continue greeting the rest of their class. But even as Mercedes is weeping with joy on Byleth’s shoulder and Ingrid is trying her damnedest not to join her, Sylvain is making plans. Figuring out how best to go about telling Byleth that he’d straight-up die for him if he asked.
Because for five years, Sylvain has mourned the man, and he has no intention of wasting any more time keeping those feelings to himself. Not when admitting them might get him the one thing he’s always thought of as out of his reach—true happiness with someone who just sees him.
Or; Sylvain is so, so in love with Byleth. He thinks Byleth might just love him back, too.
