Summary
When Bucky speaks, shattering Gale’s world in evenly measured words, he doesn’t hear it at first. It's drowned out by the loud roar of the engines beneath them and later on, he’ll wish he’d have let the plane swallow the words, left them safe in her belly to keep.
“What?” He asks instead, turning to Bucky who looks at him, a sad but accepting look in his eyes.
“I’m not in love with you anymore. Thought you should know given… well.” Bucky shrugs and Gale can only stare at him, static roaring in his ears instead of the noise of the plane. “Thanks for giving me time to figure myself out, I suppose.”
OR Bucky tells Gale that he's not in love with him anymore on their flight back to the States after the war ends. They go their separate ways but not for long. When Gale calls, Bucky comes to whisk the sullen major away from his hometown, starting a road trip full of realizations, adventures and confessions.

Bucky grins. “Hey, thanks for wanting to put up with my folks. I would be bored out of my mind without you here. And anyway, gives me a great excuse to get out of family obligations that I have no interest in attending.”
Gale ducks his head, hides his expression at Bucky’s words. Whatever his folks are like, they certainly are more pleasant to be around than Gale’s own. “Still. I appreciate it. You guys housing and feeding me and all. It means a lot.”

Summary
Ken can barely wrap his head around it. He doesn’t have any illusions about this being an exclusive arrangement. After all, most nights that Ken works on the planes, Bucky is out at the pub.
Still, there’s something else going on. Sometimes, Bucky storms in, desperate and clearly somewhere else with his thoughts. He kisses Ken then like he could save him from whatever cliff he’s wandering along. Or perhaps, like he’s really kissing someone else.
OR Ken and Bucky find respite in each other. Sticky dynamics notwithstanding.

“Nothing special about me, Ani,” Rosie says, “Just doing my job. Flying planes.”Anakin blinks, looks away from Rosie’s open and friendly expression. He’s not sure he can bear it, not sure he can believe it either. “Just feels like it shouldn’t be that way,” he admits quietly. “Shouldn’t be random luck deciding if we can live to see another day. And who gets to do it.”
Rosie sighs, looking out at the sunset himself then. “Maybe. It’s not pretty up there. I don’t need to lie to you about that - you’ve seen it. But what’s going to happen if we give up- that’s a lot uglier than that, Ani.”
OR before Anakin's former squadron commander goes down in a mission over Hannover he orders him to be reassigned. This is how Anakin ends up as a part of Robert Rosenthal's 350th Bombardment Squadron. It doesn't help the doubts that Anakin is plagued by and it's only an empathetic commander who could explain to him that life isn't black and white. And that there's still plenty of light to discover.

The sodium glare of parking lot pole lights isn’t exactly the kindest under pretty much any and every circumstance, but it somehow sits on Gale Cleven like a lover’s caress. Featureless yellow leeches the colors out of him as it does everyone else, the angle of it overhead throws deep shadows under every prominent feature as it does everyone else, and yet somehow when he turns to lean his shoulder against the payphone booth he almost looks like one of the models some of the guys put up clippings of in their sleepers, center crease carelessly smoothed away so it hangs right. Sensuality playing at the angelic, salvation stripped down to delicious sin.

“You’ll manage, Bucky,” Gale says before he can think better of it, and when John looks up at him with eyes wet and glistening, he wishes he could take it back. Maybe not just the cold, then.
“I’ll manage?” He sounds level at least, hot drunk but no different to normal. A little edge, a little rasp.
“Without ‘im. I know it’ll be—But you’ll manage.” John’s answering scoff has a meanness in it, and he does look down again, but thankfully he doesn’t stop walking.
“I’ll manage. Yeah, I’ll manage. I’ll manage without him, because I managed before, that right?”
“That’s right.” Gale’s murmuring again, and you don’t grow up in Wyoming without learning how to soothe a horse, and somehow that’s the voice he’s using right now. Tempted, even, to soothe like he would a horse: hand rubbed broad along John’s flank, cupping his neck like he’d cupped Gale in the pub, rubbing solid and firm. Might quiet those jitters, still jittering even though John’s trudging along with his sight on the ground, trying to sniff away his wet eyes.
