“Eddie,” Buck breathes, laughing humorlessly, his voice wet and thick. “If we sat here and-- and went through the list of things I want…” his hands gesture aimlessly. “We’d-- be here all night.”
Eddie nods, catching Buck’s eyes again. “Maybe-- we start with mine, then.”
The space between them feels charged with static, like the second before the thunder finally rumbles.

Summary
Eddie was kind to a fault; if Buck just asked to be held for a little while, Eddie would probably indulge him. But a ‘probably’ wasn’t certain enough for his liking and Buck couldn’t handle another crushing blow tonight, both literally and figuratively. Tonight, he just wanted to pretend for one last time that Eddie was his in all the ways he wanted him to be and bask in the feeling of being held and safe in his arms.
Besides, Buck loved sex, he really did. And maybe he wasn’t exactly in the mood for it right now, but once he was in the moment he was sure he’d get there with a little help. But even if he didn’t, it would hardly be a hardship to go through with it anyway to fast forward things to the cuddling afterglow he was desperately craving. He always enjoyed pleasing his partners, even if he didn’t get anything in return himself and he had enough experience in playing his cards right with others to make sure that Eddie wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference. None of his previous hookups ever did, or maybe they just didn’t care. It was sex they wanted from him, after all.
And as far as Buck was concerned, sex was the price of admission he was always more than happy to pay.

Summary
Buck doesn’t know what he’s going to say next. All he hears is the awful sound of splintering wood, a beam emancipating itself from above them. Without another thought, Buck lunges forward and pushes Eddie out of its path.
When Buck falls through the unstable give of the floor, he feels a bone chilling terror. But it’s okay, because Eddie was knocked away. The beam missed him.
Then, a terrible noise like thunder, a mammoth of sound, and Eddie is falling too. Why is Eddie falling too?
Buck takes a great big tumble. Like always, Eddie is right behind him.

On the drive back to the hotel Max had turned to him, blue eyes fierce and piercing.
“Promise me you won’t stop being angry. You’re angry because you know what you can do. Use it, control it, let it fuel you. Other people won’t understand but that doesn’t matter, you know what you’re capable of.”
You and me, he’d seemed to say, we’re the same.
Charles wonders now how he ever thought Max wouldn’t understand.
Or: Charles leaves Ferrari, tries to win a championship, and learns some things about belonging. All the while, Max is there.

Summary
He doesn’t blame Max, not really.
If he could have Charles for one night, he would never let him go either.
Maybe he isn’t the one who is losing; Max is also playing a losing game.
You can’t open yourself to Charles and try to exist in his charmed life without becoming irrevocably enamoured.
When Max let Charles walk into his motorhome, when he let Charles slip into his existence, Max didn’t know it then but the battle was already lost.
