“He watches you, you know,” Verena remarks one night before bed. Emmrich knows her well enough that the tone of her voice is too casual to be innocent.
He turns his head to look at her, putting aside his book on the bedside table. His wife is sitting on the side of the bed, taking off one of her golden earrings as she studies him, something flickering in her dark eyes. Amusement, he realises.
“Often and with, dare I even say this, great interest,” she adds and reaches over to stroke the line of his jaw with one burgundy nail. He is quick enough to catch her hand and press a kiss to her knuckles, and for a moment she looks incredibly surprised by this simple show of affection, that it makes his heart break.
“My dear, what on earth are you talking about?”
