The words land like a punch, sour in his mouth the second they leave it. He knows it’s a cheap shot, a low blow—but damn it if it doesn’t feel good. He’s flushing, but his anger has left him with a sense of cold, sickening calm. It’s the same kind of rush he gets when a patient arrests in front of him, the light fading out of their eyes. He’s struck a nerve, and he knows it.
