Summary
Weeks after their confrontation with Tails and Sonic, and after both Kitsunami and Surge had to return to Starline's laboratory, Kitsunami becomes seriously ill, to the point that Surge is forced to turn to his worst enemy and the person he hated the most, believing him to be responsible: Sonic.
Or; after their confrontation with Sonic, Tails (and in a way Eggman) and after Kit and Surge returned to Dr. Starline's old base, where suddenly and without explanation Kit gets sick, Surge finds himself forced to rely on his greatest enemies having to learn that maybe Sonic and Tails aren't really so bad, and that she and Kit can achieve something better.
(I'm not really sure if the improvements Starline made to Surge and Kit were only physical, or if he also improved them so they wouldn't catch any diseases, but for the sake of this fanfic I'll assume not)

"So you're leaving?" the Fire-type Pokémon asked, carefully avoiding getting its paws wet in the small stream, not looking at its friend.
"Yeah," the other one nodded, wearing a mask that tried to hide any sign of sadness or weakness, showing a seriousness he didn't truly feel.
"But, are you really leaving? Or just, you know, leaving?" she asked again. The question came out hoarse from deep in her throat, overwhelmed by the very idea of saying goodbye to her first friend.
"Sadly… I’m really leaving." The frog turned to look at her, his ankles getting wet from the stream his friend refused to step into. He didn’t sound happy either.
