Summary
The straps of Shane’s hockey bag dug into his shoulders as he stood by the welcome table and hoped that this year, it would be easier. It was reasonable, in his second year at camp, to expect that he wouldn’t be so caught up in everything that wasn't hockey, what to eat and where to go and who to talk to. Maybe this year, because he knew how everything would work, the routines and the expectations, he could actually make some friends.
Shane hugged his parents goodbye and assured them that he would be fine, just like he was last year—he hadn’t been fine, he’d been miserable, but there’d been hockey so it had been worth it—and then watched them drive away with only the smallest pit of fear in his stomach. He was hopeful. He was optimistic.
And then Shane locked eyes with Ilya, and something in that look told him that he was wrong, that he shouldn’t be sure of anything, that this person was going to divide his life into two pieces and he was helpless to stop it.

Shane throws one punch, gets a god complex, and Ilya realises he is so down bad for his husband.
“You were defending my honour, Hollander?”
There’s warmth laced in the words, and Shane can’t help but laugh ever so slightly, but he catches something serious in Ilya’s expression.
“Can I tell you something?”
Shane nods, hoping he’s finally going to get some sort of explanation for Ilya’s bizarre behaviour. For a second, he worries that he might be mad, although it would be ironic for Ilya to lecture anyone on reckless behaviour since he's been its number one proponent since birth.
“It was so hot.”

Shane’s eyes glazed over with tears as they stared into each others eyes. Ilya looked curious, worried, and fearful. “What is wrong? You’re so distressed, is not good.” Ilya’s accent thickened as his worry grew, English was always harder for him when he was emotional. Instead of speaking, Shane reached into his large hoodie pocket, lifting out the stick he had just spent ten minutes crying over before coming over. Ilya looked confused, but took the stick gently from Shane’s hands.
