Jaskier has long since learned that the best way to hide a hurt, to keep someone close to you from worrying about something you’d rather they didn’t, isn’t to be silent and stoic and brave about it; it’s to whinge. Constantly. The louder the better. This strategy is most effective, of course, if you’re already in the habit of complaining about pretty much everything.

Summary
In the aftermath of the destructive battle with the unfriendly pain demon, Jaskier’s terror ebbed into a sort of overstimulated exhaustion that made it impossible to rest, or even sit down.
Jittery, fingertips dancing against his leg whenever there was a moment’s lull, he played at cleaning up until he realized he was just moving chunks and shards of stone and monolith from somewhere they didn’t belong to somewhere else they also didn’t belong. With a shrug and a sigh, he gave up and wandered Kaer Morhen until he spotted Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri.

With Geralt and Yennefer away at Thanedd, Jaskier must face what he fears most. Only it's even worse than last time, because he's not only afraid for himself.

Almost of its own volition, Geralt's hand passed across the bard's eyes and twisted into the sign, and when he barked "Axii!", what he really meant was, take all pain from him.
The familiar chime of his medallion was loud in the silence that followed. Jaskier relaxed entirely, his eyes flickering shut, and for one horrible moment Geralt thought he'd killed him.

At this worst possible moment, a breathless, nervous giggle burst from him, but the line about at least buying him dinner first died on his lips as the witcher snarled and Jaskier felt a teeny, unusual twinge of genuine fear.
"Get in the way one more time-" Geralt ground out each syllable in turn, pinning him to the bark with his glare as much as his fist "-and I will leave you at the next inn for good."
