Summary
The thing is, El has never understood the concept of personal space. Since she came back in 1984, ever since she integrated in their lives so smoothly and so warmly, Mike has had to get used to the fact that El treats distance with him as a personal insult.
To lose her then was to lose a beautiful, wonderful, magical, tragic mystery from a little week of his childhood; to lose her now would be to lose his own heart.
Or, seventeen-year-olds dealing with love. Set just before Season 5, ep 1.

Her throat works. “Am I not allowed to do that?”
She doesn’t mean to sound defensive, but the words come out like that anyway. Mike blinks, a little surprised and she can’t blame him for it, but the gentleness of his voice doesn’t fade. “Of course you are,” he says with a nod. Never one to deny her anything.
It sends an aching pang through her chest. He’s always on her side, puts her above everyone else—including himself. He has shown it to her time and time again, proved to her repeatedly that nothing is more important to him than she is. And that—that worries her.

“Among other things,” Mike says coyly.
“You shouldn’t have.” At Mike’s sportive ‘aw’, she rolls her eyes. “Not like that. You shouldn’t have come; you have school in the morning.” She steps back so she can look at Mike properly, give him the unimpressed, I think you’re being stupid face that Mike loves so much, loves maybe even more than the face she makes when she’s happy with him.

She looks at him, a sharp grin on her face. “Friend of yours?” she asks archly.
Mike blinks, brain still two steps behind, and manages to shake his head. “No, um, no. Just… was coming to save you, I guess? Or just help? But looks like you didn’t need any help, so…..”
It’s only now that Mike is focusing on her, brain having managed to catch up, that it hits him: she’s fucking gorgeous.
Oh boy....

He doesn’t remember how he got there, but the next thing Mike remembers is being in his room, staring towards the ceiling. He could have been like this for days and he wouldn’t have known.
His eyes watered. Mike was unsure if this was due to crying or the lack of blinking he had done. He refused to even let himself see a sliver of darkness because every time he did all he saw was her, walking towards him in her void.
