Summary
At every other moment, the concern that Monsieur Madeleine showed to Inspector Javert was equal to the concern he showed every other man, woman, and child of the town. A respectful nod to acknowledge the inspector’s presence (to hide the fear that Jean Valjean was certain he couldn’t completely mask fast enough). A smile to avoid having to speak (to avoid the risk of slipping back into the rough speech that he’d used for twenty years and that Javert would recognize in a heartbeat). Apparent ignorance of the other man’s steel gaze that locked onto him every time that he crossed the inspector’s line of sight (if he acknowledged it at all, he was equally likely to bolt or to freeze, and neither would spare him in the end).
But in this moment, the inspector’s eyes were raised to the sky, a serenity apparent in his whole being that none in Montreuil-sur-Mer (and certainly no prisoner in Toulon) had seen yet.
...
My contribution to the Sewerchat Anniversary Exchange 2023. The request was for Javert & Valjean fluff, but these two emotionally-challenged idiots refused to jump straight to that without dramatics first. But I think I wrangled them into cooperating with sweetness at least.

Summary
The poem's Scots title "Auld Lang Syne" may be translated into standard English as "old long since" or, less literally, "long long ago," "days gone by," or "old times." Consequently, "For auld lang syne," as it appears in the first line of the chorus, might be loosely translated as "for the sake of old times."
.
He had thought Tseng had forgotten—he himself nearly had—he couldn't have been more than eight when he'd slipped up amidst his complaints about his father's treatment of the holidays and admitted to Tseng that none of them really were anything special anyways because of how many inane parties the president hosted that he had to attend. In response, Tseng had started quietly celebrating the holidays with him the day prior to everyone else, so the boy could actually enjoy them. He'd even—very carefully—begun sharing Wutain traditions with Rufus as well: never any Wutai-specific holidays, but etiquette around certain meals and the like. That had gone on for a couple of years, before Rufus had determined that it was silly and childish and pointless. Professional that he was, Tseng hadn't spoken of it since.
Apparently, not even to the other Turks.

Summary
Rumi felt like everything fell apart. Huntrix sank like a ship, and she let herself drown with it, like a captain should. She was a demon. A monster. The only thing she can do it's remove the mistake.
But what if before talking with Celine, she talked with someone else?

Summary
They meet in the in-between. At a bus stop just after sundown, where the air smells like warm asphalt and something sour beneath it. The streetlight flickers, and so does Jinu.

Summary
In the mirror, her eyes were still golden. But they didn’t seem as unnatural now. They were warm. Luminous. Like sunrise caught in glass. Like the colour they fought to turn the Honmoon.
“I keep forgetting,” Rumi muttered, “that I don’t have to hide anymore.”
“That’s why we’re here,” Zoey said, nudging her with an elbow. “To remind you.”
Or: A week since everything went down, Rumi finds herself forgetting she doesn't have to keep things a secret anymore. (3 times +1)

Summary
Three facts, not written on the brochures he'd picked up from the stand outside:
- Unlike most other shark species, blacktip reef sharks are known to cooperate in a hunt, relying on one another to catch their prey. It is the only shark species in which altruistic behaviour has been recorded.
- It’s fifteen minutes to closing time and so it’s highly likely that no, Jinu would not be able to buy the whale shark plush toy that he so wanted from the gift shop after all.
- Under the fluorescent lights of the aquarium tunnels, Rumi’s hair looks iridescent — shimmers like the glittering schools of fish flitting around overhead, wayward strands speckled silver under the soft glow, and Jinu has never wanted to kiss her more.
