    Hunter’s expression crumbled anew. His mouth twisted with a sob as he cried out pathetically, “I’m sorry, uncle—”

    “Save your breath.” Belos demanded. He swept his hand out once more to lie against Hunter’s hair. Hunter twitched at the feel of it. “Apologies are best served with action, rather than empty words.”

    Through ragged sobs, Hunter nodded. He swallowed what he could of his emotions and pain and tilted his head back. Obediently, he opened his mouth.

    Belos chuckled. The unfamiliar sound made Hunter tense, although he didn’t dare move.

    With his right hand still laid on Hunter’s head, his fingers carding through his hair, Belos cupped Hunter’s chin with his left. Gently, he shut his mouth.

    “Hold your tongue for now,” Belos said, “for I’ve got a better idea. Call it an experiment of sorts.”
