Summary
Michaela, whilst grieving and overwhelmed with the feelings blossoming in her chest for her cousin's widow, does the only thing she can think to do when asked so sweetly to stay, she flees.
But now, after two years of running, she has returned to London, determined to make amends with the woman she has managed to convince herself she cannot fall in love with, under any circumstances.
Yet her chosen path is not an easy one, for Francesca Stirling, now seething with rage, grief, and a furious current of feelings she neither understands nor can explain, is just as determined to discover the very reason for Michaela's flight in the first place, a reason Michaela is intent on keeping to herself.

“You are pretty,” El offers shyly, glancing over the blanket at Max’s unevenly-spaced freckles, like someone splattered golden-brown paint all over her face, and it turned out just right.
Somehow, it feels different than when she called Will handsome. When she said that, she had not felt warm, like she does now. Her toes had not tingled. Her fingers had not twitched.
Maybe Max can tell her what this means.

Summary
A while ago, El watched a movie where a man took the hands of an actress with a pretty smile into his own. I’m mad about you, he told her, feverishly. He didn’t sound angry, not really– but that’s what he said. Mad. El came to her conclusion, then.
The heat in her cheeks must mean that she is mad about Max.
The first time El sees Max, she sweeps her off her feet. Over the next few years, Max returns the favour.
