“Did you write this book with someone in mind?”
The words dropped into the space between them like a stone dropped into a still lake. The air rippled and shifted like it was trying to accommodate Mike’s answer before it fell from his lips. Like it was expecting the heavy truth before it settled.
Mike didn’t move. Didn’t blink.
For a terrible, terrible second, he felt inclined to tell the truth. A name hovered over his tongue. A single syllable, just out of reach to make its damning presence known, but far away enough for him to pretend it wasn’t there, waiting to be let out.
Don’t over explain. Ambiguity sells.
“No,” he said.
Mike felt something in his stomach curdle violently.
He knew it was a lie.

Sirius tilted his head, looking up at the ceiling as if considering the question. As he did that, he stubbed his cigarette on the small plate they had placed on the windowsill, giving Remus an ounce of his sanity back. “It’s hardly new, isn’t it?” He asked, laughing quietly “I reckon I must have told you sometime. It has been almost two months”
“Two months?!” Remus exclaimed, baffled.
