In commenting on the last installment in the Metric universe, I said that Jamie’s date with Claire was complete dating wish fulfillment on my part. Which got me thinking about their next date and what other personal preferences I could cram into this story. And yet it’s definitely Claire’s turn to take Jamie for a spin, which meant that... well, you’ll see!

Often we see Jamie being the jealous one, but this idea came to me fully formed. Set way back at the beginning of the Metric timeline, sometime between Breathing Underwater and Lost Kitten. Claire POV, and also just a hint of Jamie/John. The title song is by TV on the Radio and doesn’t have much to do with the subject matter, except for one line which has always made me... *pulls at imaginary collar*

I’ve been very busy with work, life, etc. and haven’t found much time or energy to write. Add to that the fact that I left Metric Jamie and Claire in a very happy place, wrapped up in each other under the eaves at Lallybroch. But I found myself wondering how their return to normalcy might unfold, and this little glimpse is what I came up with.
There’s no song to go along with this fic, because finding accompanying music is time consuming!

Their unspoken rule is to never mention the way they still find each other — after a panic attack at midnight, after a dinner she wasn't supposed to attend — and fold into each other like no time has passed at all. But the careful distance they've built is collapsing. Rumors about him dating. Secrets their son is pulling out of everyone around them. And the past Claire tried so hard to shield her kids from is finally catching up to them.
