“Did I stutter?” Her voice is ice, and it makes even those in the gallery flinch.

“First of all” Amelia steps closer to them. “I’m a really incredible surgeon, so he’ll be great. Second” She unclips her pager and waves it around in the air. “We have this. Third.” She steps even closer, and Kai’s heart jumps. “I’m asking you to stay.”

After a beat of silence, Kai takes a decisive step closer. They thread careful fingers through her hair, tilting her face up and gently forcing her to meet their eyes. Amelia’s throat feels suddenly tight, but some of the rapidly building tension eases.
“Whatever it is,” they say softly, thumb brushing over the curve of her jaw, and she doesn’t know a single thing in the world except for the fact that this feels safe, they feel safe. “You can say it. No judgement.”
