    “I thought you quit.”

Brian flicked ash off the end of his cigarette, watching the embers flare briefly before fading into the obscurity of the gray dawn light. “I say the same thing every time I sleep with you and look where we are,” he murmured, the downward curve of his lips deepening as a broad hand reached over his shoulder, snagging the last of the smoldering length and grinding it out on the wrought iron railing of the balcony.

“I’m actually seeing someone,” Jamie blurted out, much to his own surprise. Fuck. How was he going to get himself out of this one?

    “Is he a footballer, too?”

    “Um.” Shit. “Yeah.”

“What’s his name? Is he a Premier League player too? Would we know him?” Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

“It’s uh.” Shit. Jamie was panicking. He wasn’t even really thinking when he responded. “It’s Roy Kent.”

“It’ll take two seconds,” Higgins says. “I like to keep up to date with all the players, you know. I just thought, well, you moved recently. And your emergency contact.”

He pauses here, and Jamie raises an eyebrow. His emergency contact? He’d probably filled out some joke response last time, hadn’t he. Fucking Queen of England, Boris Johnson’s wife, something good.

“Oi, let’s see it then,” and Higgins passes over the paper like it’s a live bomb, and Jamie scans down to where he sees his own handwriting sitting over a few dotted lines, and, well. It sure ain’t the Queen.

or: Jamie goes through a series of unfortunate events, changes his emergency contact a few times, and considers the possibility that maybe, actually, letting other people help isn’t all bad after all.

    Summary

The bubble had to burst. Every fucking bubble in his whole fucking life has burst at one point or another.

He remembers the game during his last season at Chelsea when the bubble burst and reality set in — he was slow; he was old; his career was going to come to an end sooner rather than later.

He remembers Keeley freaking out on the couch when the bubble burst and reality set in — he was smothering her; he was too much; they weren’t as “perfect and compatible” as he thought.

So, yeah. He knows it will burst. He know this thing (cause there is no way in hell he’s putting an actual label to it) that’s started to be the fucking bright spot of his life will have to burst at some point.

He doesn’t expect it to burst on a random Tuesday evening in early July, with Jamie laying next to him -- sprawled out, naked, and with that post-orgasm blissed-out gaze that Roy’s become all to fucking fond of.

    ***
While in the midst of figuring out their relationship, Roy and Jamie must handle the sudden passing of Roy's sister.

    Summary

Jamie tells himself he’ll never do that again.

This wasn’t the first time he hurt himself willingly, not the first time he picked up a razor blade with the intent of making himself bleed, but it was the first in a few months and God, Jamie missed this feeling like crazy.

The feeling of being in control, of finally being the one choosing to cause himself harm, pain, sadness. When he was the one holding the blade his father didn’t exist, the pain his father caused him didn’t even hurt anymore, all he could feel was the itching from the cuts running along his arms.
