Summary
The petty vandalism of trampling flowers is hardly the sort of stakes that Barnaby is used to - even back when they were in the second league, it wasn't the sort of crime they'd bother with.
And yet, it's the most satisfied Barnaby has felt in months.

If it was just up to him, he has little doubt that he and Kotetsu would be in each other's lives for the rest of their own, but Kotetsu has a bad habit of leaving Barnaby when the convenience of their working relationship breaks down.

Summary
Three things then happen in short succession:
1) Barnaby realizes what he just blurted out and matches Kotetsu’s wide-eyed stare with his own frenzied gaze.
2) Kotetsu’s grip on his wine glass slackens and drops it, where it rolls off the table to fall to the floor, the glass breaking into pieces and spilling wine all over Kotetsu’s dining room table and floor.
3) Desperate to cling to any life preserver to save himself from the deadly riptide he's caught himself in by his impromptu confession, Barnaby shoots to his feet, eyes fixed on the spill.
"That's going to stain!" he shouts, much too loud, and even as Kotetsu begins to mumble some sort of excuse, Barnaby is running to Kotetsu’s bathroom for a towel and definitely, definitely isn't thinking about how he just ruined everything.

On August 14th, 1980, Barnaby Brooks Jr. kisses Kotetsu T. Kaburagi for the first time.

Summary
It feels almost cliched, particularly for them, to have this conversation on the roof of the training center. This is where they’re at, though, and his patience is wearing thin.
“Kotetsu, we need to talk.”
He could have maybe phrased that better, based on the way his partner’s shoulders tense and the air between them instantly thickens. Even though this hadn’t exactly been the sort of tone he wanted to enter this conversation with, what’s done is done. He rests his hands on his hips and waits for Kotetsu to slowly, nervously, turn to face him.

“We never talked about it,” he says, gripping the leather sleeve of his jacket tightly and wishing that it was easier to clutch in his fist. “About what we said. Back when I thought you were dying.”
