    He hastily clicked open the folder, his eyes barely glancing through the dozen or so shots there, vaguely registering a picture with a sunset background from his condo balcony, something of him laughing, a picture of him working at his laptop with his glasses on...

    The director called him again, and he shook his head, the photos blurring. Whatever. It would have to do.

    He clicked "select all," then the messages icon, then Rozanov's name. Hit send.

    Ilya was used to hazing. He had been subjected to it, he had participated in it, and, as a captain, he had stood guard over the rookies and protected them from anything truly harmful. But if he had been asked, Ilya would have approved of this prank. He would have authorized it, given Cliff and Vicky his seal of approval, perhaps even helped orchestrate it.

    Any other day, Ilya might have been happy to play along.

    But, in perfect dramatic irony, it had not happened any other day. It had happened today. And, cherry on top, of course the rookie had to walk in when Shane was already freaking out about Ilya saying his name.

    A prank-gone-wrong leads to the Boston Bears finding out about Shane and Ilya’s relationship in 2016. The day Ilya first invited Shane into his house. Right after they say each other’s names for the first time. Fuck his life, honestly.

    Shane stares down the medic, “Get a tourniquet on his leg and Cliff will leave but not a fucking second sooner.”  
    The other medic, a woman, starts going through their medical equipment bags and kneels next to Cliff. The loud one, a man, nods at Shane. 

    “That’s fair. And other than holding his hand, what are you doing to help, Mr. Hollander?” Shane glances down at Ilya’s pale and frightened face. He briefly takes stock of what just happened. He’s on the ice holding Ilya Rozanov’s hand. He's in his regular clothes at a game he’s not playing in. He steels himself and meets the medic's eyes again. Fuck it. 

    “I’m his boyfriend. I guess I’m here for moral support. Give me something useful to do and I’ll do it. But I’m not going anywhere.” 

    Shane looks down at Ilya. He shrugs his shoulders and smiles tightly. He watches as Ilya goes from shocked to awed to joyous and finally to overwhelmed. His eyes are glassy and he swallows roughly. “Have I lost too much blood, or did you just tell someone you are my boyfriend?” Shane scoffs and smiles down at him, “A little bit of both. Just stay awake, ok?”
