“Sam?”
Sam exhaled, long and as slow as he physically could, before turning to face Josh again. He stood just a few feet into their room, curls lit softly by the lamp between their beds, confusion visible on his face as he stared at him, eyes gentle but questioning, patient in a way he so rarely was with anyone. Normally on nights like this, they went with CJ and Toby to a bar around the corner and played pool for a few hours, drinking just enough to feel it then but not the next morning. This wasn’t something they’d ever done, and Sam– Sam could feel anxiety clawing at his throat, because what if this was the wrong move? The wrong decision? What if Josh didn't feel the same and he ruined everything they'd built, everything that had grown between them again in the last few months?
“I love you.”

Summary
There were things that Samantha couldn’t quite figure out. Too many things, really, for her liking. The world didn’t make an ounce of sense most of the time, nor did anyone in it. Everywhere she went, everyone she met, always had all these assumptions, these expectations about what she should be like; she should wear more dresses, she wasn’t wearing enough pink, her hair wasn’t long enough, she shouldn’t play with the neighbor kids she played with every day. The list of what everyone wanted, what everyone thought, seemed to grow every year, seemed to just get longer and longer with every new person she met, every new place she went. Everyone at church expected her to be the picture-perfect little angel with ribbons in her hair and ruffles on her dresses. Everyone at home expected her to be quiet and listen, do exactly as she was told. Everyone at school expected her to be smart, to follow the rules, to make friends, but only the right friends.

Summary
“Shut up, Cregg.”
CJ hummed in response, taking another long sip of her champagne, before finally looking away from Sam to look at him again. The look on her face was some odd combination of sad and annoyed and amused, like she couldn’t decide if she wanted to yell at him, hug him, or shove him, and he rolled his eyes. He hadn’t meant to go back to staring at Sam, hadn’t expected his eyes to drift back to him where he had now moved on to speaking with someone else that Josh didn’t recognize, yet he couldn’t look away. The lights of the garden didn’t make anyone else look quite as flattering as Sam, didn’t make anyone else look like they were encased in candlelight and painted in oils. Yet there Sam stood in all his magnificent, beautiful glory under the lamp light, and even though Josh knew he couldn’t tell him, couldn’t go up to him and wrap him up in his arms, he ached to be able to do so. Because Sam was just so–
“And I’ve lost you to the exact thing I’m talking to you about. I swear, if you two don’t get your act together, Donna and I are going to have to lock you up in a closet together until you do.”

Summary
Josh just barely managed to throw out his arms in time to catch himself from falling completely on top of the other person, the force of the fall sending ripples of pain up his arms and through his elbows. For a second, his eyes seemed to blur a bit as he adjusted to very suddenly being on the floor, his hair—already a mess from practically running from his apartment to the Capitol Building—falling forward into his eyes and across his forehead.
The man below him blinked slowly up at him, his eyes a vibrant blue in contrast to his dark hair and sun-kissed skin. He couldn’t have been much younger than Josh, probably an aide just like him, though he’d never seen him before. Josh stared down at him, something in his chest sparking, and felt frozen, like his muscles didn’t want to let him move away from the guy beneath him, like something in him had forgotten how to move.
