    Summary

When Kushina notices that Obito's a kinesthetic learner like her, she tries to ignore it. Really, she does—but Minato has no idea what he's doing when it comes to teaching him, and Kushina can't let the kid's potential be wasted like that. She takes on Obito as a student, then, and somehow gets Rin as one too. It changes... pretty much everything.

Kushina can’t shake that moment from from her mind. She can’t help but to remember all the times she’s heard him referred to as unmotivated, or lazy, or untalented.

Because now the pieces have clicked together, it’s become overwhelmingly clear that Obito is like her, but he doesn’t have the fallbacks she has. He doesn’t have the strength of being a jinchuuriki to back him up, or the chakra chains she’s had from the beginning. Worst of all, she thinks, he’s been pitted up against the most talented prodigy of his generation since day one, constantly compared and found to be lesser.

And Kushina knows Minato, knows he’ll do everything he can to make his kids get along, to eliminate any rivalries that might arise in the name of teamwork. That’s all fine and good, she supposes, but it’s not what Obito needs.

    Summary

Obito can’t hear anything beyond the cave crumbling around them, thousands of tons of rock cascading down and crushing everything it can. Can’t see beyond the dust in the air, the vibrations of the world around him. Couldn’t, anyway, because he can barely keep his eyes open.

“It’s going to be okay,” he whispers into Kakashi’s hair. He knows Kakashi won’t hear him. Wouldn’t, even if he were conscious. That’s okay; the words are as much for him as they’re for Kakashi.

He presses himself closer, focuses on the warmth of Kakashi as the world fades in and out, as every bit of remaining light is snuffed and he can feel debris falling on every side of them, huge and heavy and deadly, if they’re hit. He can’t feel Kakashi’s heart beat past the world falling in on itself, but he tells himself it’s there, tells himself that Kakashi’s not dead.

    Summary

“I—” Minato-sensei stops, turns to Kakashi. His expression is sympathetic, restrained devastation and grief. It makes Kakashi feel small, like he’s a little kid again and he just found his father, just felt his world shatter for the first time. The first, and not the last, because Obito—“We can’t leave him here.”

“Kakashi,” regretful. “He’s—under that much stone…”

Kakashi shakes his head. “I know,” he croaks out, and he sounds broken. (He feels broken. How can’t he, when Obito’s—Obito’s gone, gone and dead and Kakashi will never get to—) “We need to—to bury him, or something.” It’s—not a shinobi thing, really, not something most care about. A waste of time at best. Kakashi’s father had spared the time to bury everyone, even his enemies. Kakashi’s jaw is beginning to hurt from how tightly he has it clenched, and his nails dig into his palms. He doesn’t know what he’ll do, if Minato-sensei refuses.
