    During King Robet's trip to Winterfell, he is very impressed by the prowess shown by his best friend's bastard son, Jon Snow. So much so that he demands Jon come with his father South to train, in the hopes of becoming a Kingsguard.

    Of course with the truth being what it is, Ned isn't exactly on-board with this idea.

    But Jon is smart. Far smarter than people think. He knows that training in King's Landing and swearing himself to the Kingsguard is a far better option than sacrificing his youth and the rest of his life to some glorified penal colony in the North.

    So he goes South. Tyrion, ever the pot-stirrer, goes with. A great friendship blooms and with it, the destiny of the Seven Kingdoms are forever changed. Secrets revealed, loyalties tested and lifelong friendships dissolve.

    After turning down his father’s request that he stay and serve in Kings Landing, Aemon Targaryen does not go to Dragonstone to serve his oldest brother as Maester. Instead, he heads to Winterfell to serve House Stark taking himself as far away from Kings Landing as possible with no plan to ever return despite the pain it causes him.

    He grows to love House Stark over the sixty years he serves them. But he never forgets House Targaryen and he watches their rise and fall closely. Within a year of 282 AC, Rickard, Brandon, Rhaegar, Rhaenys and Aegon are all dead and he is the last Targaryen in Westeros. Riddled with guilt, he resigns himself to the fact that he has managed to fail not only House Targaryen but also House Stark.

    Then Ned Stark returns from Dorne with Jon Snow.
