“Do you happen to have some extra detergent? I totally forgot to bring mine with me, and I don’t wanna have to walk all the way back to get it.”

Is that an American accent Henry hears? With a southern twinge?

    “I–erm–”

“I’ll pay for one of your loads in exchange,” the man adds on, a pleading tone in his voice.

“No, you… You don’t have to do that. I do have some extra. Here,” and Henry hands the man the bottle.

“Thank you so much! You’re a lifesaver.”

And with that, the man walks away to wherever he’s doing his laundry, and Henry sits there stunned.

    -

Or where Henry is a struggling insomniac who does laundry at night. Alex also does his laundry at night. Cue the romantic atmosphere.

    Summary

The first time Henry is made of aware of them, he hears the sound before he sees their origin. Or rather, he hears the little girl; a bright peel of laughter carrying towards him on the wind, the reds and golds of the autumn leaves falling around her as she excitedly tugs on the sleeve of the man she’s with, forcing him to pay her attention. Her words float towards Henry on the breeze.

“Tìo Alex! No, silly! That’s not right! The pinecone clearly beats the acorn!” Henry sees the expression the young girl is giving the man – Alex. There’s a steel in her eyes that he will later learn is very much inherited from her uncle.

Or: Henry and David meet Alex and his niece in an autumnal park. They play a game together and the rest, as they say, is history.

    Summary

“Alex, I think you know as well as I do that running until you cause intense bleeding to your feet is not an advisable or healthy coping mechanism.”

“I think it’s great that you are regularly able to get outside to destress but how much of your surroundings do you really notice when you run?” Alex knows this is a rhetorical question. Knows that she knows the answer to it would be ‘practically zero’. That the only thing in his ears in the pounding of his protesting feet, until the pain becomes loud enough that the noise in his head fades to a fuzzy white static.

“I’d really like you to try to slow down during your next run. Try to take notice of the little things you pass. The color of the leaves. The smell of fresh-cut grass,”—at the mention of this distinctive smell, Alex’s whole body almost instinctively reaches out to find Henry in the otherwise empty room—“the people you pass.”

“Write it down if you need to. We can look through it together at your next appointment. It might be good to see a tangible representation of how you progress.”

Or: Alex's therapist tells him to slow down. Alex doesn't think he can; at least not without Henry's help.
