Summary
Hidden in one of the forgotten bars of St. Louis, shrouded away by the glow of Marigold Room and the remains of the Lackadaisy, a friendship between a newspaper writer and doctor strains at the face of hidden views of the entire rum-running scene, both by them and those unwilling to say anything about it, all spurred by the mention of one Atlas May. Yet, both men have been shaped by the scene in one facade or the other, spilling over into their careers as they press through the storm, eventually having a chance encounter with some of those they despise the most, becoming shaken and silent.

Summary
What little Steven Webb has to his name along the Missouri River is held together in the firm belief that his life will make sense someday, leading him to a better road. Arriving in the region in 1920, he had lived a rather unassuming life, providing illicit alcohol from his shed next to his lonely cabin for communities surrounding the gateway city, never daring to step foot in its deep-rooted underground wars. In private, away from the lineage of customers trailing from farm town to farm town, little in the way of grand events happened. Though he found some comfort in the familiar, there was an undeniable sense of something greater unwilling to burgeon from his soul. It was only when, on one banal evening, a black touring car arrived through the clearing in the woods, driven by more so a specter than a man. Unbeknownst to the brewer, this chance encounter at the hands of those too far out and high up for him to care for rips him from his comfortable, albeit demoralizing life, into a series of events that test and alter him to his very core.
