    Summary

The figure that steps into the airlock is one Satoru recognizes by the way his hips move in mag boots and how his gloved fingers stretch as he feels along the wall.

It’s the man he’s spent almost every day of the last ten years with. The one he’s kissed every which way—even upside down with the gravity off. They’ve ventured places only a handful of humans have ever gone. They’ve thrived together in the kind of isolation that fries others’ brains. They know each other better than most people know themselves.

Closer now, and the front of that EVA helmet still reveals nothing; the place where a face should be is obscured by a sea of floating black hair.

    “Suguru?”

Satoru and Suguru—best friends of more than a decade and soon-to-be-married, if Satoru gets his way—are the lone occupants of an orbital research station some hundred thousand light years from Earth.

But they’re not as alone as they think.

    Summary

Suguru cries for hours; until his voice is no more. He is the last to leave, even as his parents pat his back and tell him that they have to retire for the night, even as police officers and first-aid workers and all relevant personnel come and go. He stays until the sun rises, and the search team finally resurfaces from the depths of the ocean with Satoru’s body.

He leaves before he can see Satoru’s corpse.

Suguru knows he won’t be able to stop his guts spilling out of his mouth if he does.

    Summary

He knows all the beats by heart now. His heart pounds in the same rhythm ingrained in his bones. So, when the curtains sweep into the wings, dragging velvet away from view, a thousand pairs of eyes immediately hone in on his tiny form. When he bows in accordance to the rhythm, he can observe the fragrant wood he stands on, natural patterns spanning the surface of the stage. If he were any more childish than he is, his six-year old self appearing so small on a stage too big for his body, maybe he would start tracing each crevice with the tip of his finger.

But Satoru is not a child, even though he appears to be one. He’s larger than life itself, his existence encapsulating the pinnacle of a child prodigy. As he soaks in the spotlights, alabaster skin iridescent with the tint of body glitter, he awaits the resounding applause to fade away before his act starts. He knows his place, and he knows the role he has to play. Satoru Gojo is no more, he knows, as he shoves every part of himself that makes him Satoru deep into his gut, as it coils in his stomach like the familiar feeling of nausea.

    Summary

The two lines stare right back at him, red and unmistakable, like a figment of both his best and worst imagination. He can’t think of anything, nothing but the conversation in the cafe playing and replaying in his mind. Suguru’s words, his facial expressions, the way he looked uncomfortable and with a strained voice said that he doesn’t think he can see himself having children any time in the near future. His hand starts trembling so hard the pregnancy test makes a loud thud as it falls into the sink and without warning he hovers over the toilet, whatever he had for breakfast and lunch coming out as he vomits everything until he almost passes out.
