Her voice rose, signaling the end of the song was near. It warbled, heartbroken and ethereal.
Theo felt like his soul had left his body. It was hovering, somewhere on the ceiling, watching this waif of a woman who had just softly spilled her entire being onto the floor of an empty coffee shop.
Just as abruptly, she stepped around the microphone, lightly bounded off the riser, and left the café. The bell tinkled, and the door clicked shut.
Heavy stillness reigned in her absence. It took twenty seconds for Theo to realize he’d stopped breathing. He gasped in air, feeling lightheaded and off-kilter.
What the inglorious fuck?OR: Theodore Nott is a barista near the campus of his university by night and an art student desperate for inspiration by day. One evening, just before closing, a mysterious woman walks up to the open mic and sings to the otherwise-empty café. Predictably, she becomes his muse.
