Summary
As Abaddon embarks on his quest of rescuing Esther and the family from future harm, he notes a mysterious presence surrounding Nathan's living days. Now that she was actually paying attention, it was beyond obvious that something was wrong. Caine was always a peculiar character, filled to the brim with personality. He was excitable, dramatic, and incredibly expressive.
He wasn't any of those things anymore.
He still tried to be, clearly, he still put in the effort to make sure there were daily adventures and plenty of other ‘amusing’ activities… But his mind wasn't in it anymore. Instead of excited speeches on what the day's adventure would be, he'd present it like it was a job, no excited blaring voice, no wild motions, no bits, just a simple summary of what was going to happen
Aka, author puts Caine in a blender because they couldn't find any angst that was quite as violently depressing and horrible as they wanted

"The hotel was surprisingly nice, Katherine thought. Or, at least, it wasn’t as run down as she’d been expecting. After all, the place had been sitting empty on the mountain for, what, seven months? Maybe more? She wouldn’t have been surprised to see the front gate rusted shut or ivy barring the windows, or even graffiti from the local kids, but no. Aside from some overgrown foliage in the driveway and, from what she could see stepping out of her car, a fountain full of murky water, her late brother’s hotel sat relatively unscathed."
OR, a season 1 rewrite wherein the Freelings move into the hotel seven months after Nathan's death, and gradually uncover the supernatural elements of the hotel, Nathan's ghostly existence, and the mysteries behind Abaddon, the strange homeless kid squatting on their property. Among it all, relationships are formed and tested, old family wounds are called to the surface, and maybe--just maybe--the Freelings will stumble upon the source of their supernatural troubles while managing to pay off Nathan's debts, keep their license to operate, and not get killed by the entities that really--really--want the family to go into the basement.
