Summary
“Do you think my hair smells?” Jackie asks suddenly. She takes her hand off of Shauna’s knee to pat at her hair self-consciously, and Shauna’s skin mourns the loss of contact.
Shauna leans forward into Jackie’s personal space and inhales, her nose inches from the space where Jackie’s hair meets her shoulder. She closes her eyes. Definitely the weed.
“No,” she says, but she takes a second to lean away. “I just get your shampoo.”
Or: The one where they go to a party and take the pictures that end up on Shauna's mirror and Jackie's dresser.

Summary
"She’s different now, honey. There’s something—I don’t know what happened out there, but she’s not the same as you remember. Just don’t take it personally."
Deb’s words rattle around Jackie’s skull as she stands outside the hospital room. The plain wooden door seems to mock her. Why can’t she grab it? Why is she just standing there?
"She’s not the same as you remember."
Jackie's appendix ruptures the morning she's supposed to board the plane to Nationals. The flight never makes it to Seattle. Two years later, rescuers find the team alive, and Jackie thinks her nightmare is finally ending. Except the Shauna that returns to their hometown is not the same as the one who left.

Summary
Sue tried not to think about the implications of her feelings. She tried not to think about what it meant that she thought about Mary always, she tried not to think about how much she hated not being around her. She knows it’s wrong, she knows whatever feeling this is is immoral, against every belief she’s had instilled in her since she was small. But part of her can’t seem to stop, no matter how much she wants to. Her mind was infected, Mary’s consciousness worming its way through hers until they were completely intertwined, and Sue was unable to separate herself from Mary. She hates it, she hates herself, but part of her doesn’t want to let it go, not when it feels like this.
or
Sue Gilbert Dickinson struggles with her feelings, until Emily.

Summary
Austin wishes he could say he knew. Now, looking at it with the clear eyes of hindsight, it was obvious. Blatant even. But Austin hadn’t wanted to see it. He knows he’d let himself be blinded from the obvious.
or
Austin Dickinson hasn't always known about Sue and Emily.

Summary
So slowly, to keep both of them from getting scared, she reaches out and wraps two fingers around Emily’s wrist. And Emily is holding her breath too, when Sue dips her head forward like the boy from two weeks ago had, and then just when she’s about to pull away, to lean back and smile and shake off whatever’s winging its way through her chest, to explain this all away as a game, Emily shuts her eyes and leans closer.

Summary
So everything is fine, and normal, and Sue’s starting to think that the way she wakes up in the middle of the night sweating, vague memories of a dream full of soft arms and dark hair she knows almost as well as her own fleeing her hazy mind might not be a problem at all.

Summary
Usually the sight of Sue laughing or enjoying herself would bring an easy smile to Emily’s lips but watching her laugh with Austin, even if it wasn’t her usual full laugh where her eyes wrinkled and she covered her mouth, sent a stone into the pit of her stomach.
She climbs the stairs to her mother on the second floor and wonders just how long the weight in her stomach will last.

Summary
Emily touched her approximately one million times every day, and none of those times had ever sent Sue’s heart rocketing into her throat like this, none had broken her apart so thoroughly or abruptly, like the final chip in a hopelessly splintered stone, and now she’d been split entirely.
(Sue's just trying to figure her life out. Emily keeps making it harder.)
