Shane leans into him. “Can I tell you a secret?” Shane wobbles as he asks and catches himself by winding an arm around Ilya’s waist.
“Of course.” Trust is the foundation of their relationship. They’ve always kept each other’s secrets. They just have far fewer of them now. “Is what husbands are for, I think.”
“This is a hockey secret,” Shane says, nonsensically.
A hockey secret?
“Maybe you did not hear,” Ilya says it like he’s sharing a secret of his own, “but I just won the Stanley Cup without any top secret Hollander hockey moves.”
Shane smacks his shoulder and leaves his hand on Ilya’s chest. “We did that to-geth-er.” The words come out of Shane’s mouth strangely musically.

“Ilya… What’s wrong? You can talk to me.”
Ilya shakes his head, mouth trembling. “I— I don’t—”
He does not know why he is feeling sad again. It should be so easy. This life is everything Ilya has ever wanted, that he honestly doubted he would ever get to experience. Yes, he knew it would not be perfect, living with Shane, that he might get sad sometimes like his mother, but he did not expect to feel hurt like this.
And how can he explain that it hurts, let alone why? That would be so painful for Shane to hear. He might feel like he is being a bad husband if he can’t fix it, like he is failing Ilya. That would be horrible because Shane is a wonderful husband and Ilya is the failure. Shane is trying to understand him, to help, and Ilya can’t give him that because it’s not something Shane can fix.
Ilya and Shane are married, the team is great, the sex is awesome. There are no problems. Okay, some problems.

He wanted to be by Ilya’s side for everything, the mundane, the bright and the hard. And maybe not everyone who was in love felt like this, so overwhelmed and so steadied all at once. But Shane did. And if love was a contest, well… he is the winner.
Best couple. Number one. Most epic love story ever.Or 4 times Shane told people him and Ilya were practically soulmates and the 1 time the universe told him.
