One deigned to approach, to brush against her. Like a breath on an ember. Wrapping the last glimmer beneath her breast. Lena asked her then. Why had she left without her? She begged her. To take her with her. Just to be together. At last.
Long filigree lines were drawn across her cheeks, invading her neck before ending in the valley of her chest. Darkening the present fabric. It was painful. So painful. Drawing on her last reserves of water, her veins, her arteries. The shadow didn't guide her hand. Only a whisper, with the power of a bomb, resounded. A survival instinct before everything went black. Run. Run. Run.Or: What if Lena, instead of trying to heal the humanity, tried to heal herself by leaving National City and everyone behind.

Summary
Eventually, the lasers recede, leaving incandescent flames burning bright in her eyes. Kara chokes on a sob. Her arm is throbbing, so do her ribs. The gashes, burns, broken bones, as deep as they run, don’t hold a candle to the real pain. And she’s tired. So tired. Her body aches, sags under the weight of something she can no longer hold.
Rain is pouring over her. It creates a canvas of blood, soot and tears on her cheeks; smears them in a botched attempt to wash it all away. It seems fitting, she thinks, that the sky would weep for her. With her.
Her legs give out. She falls to her knees in a puddle of water, feels the concrete crack under the pressure of a strength she doesn’t care to control anymore. More destruction. More pain. She tilts her head back, lets the water beat her angrily. She did this to herself. Maybe she was a fool to believe that she could ever hope.
“Kara!”
