Zhou Fei doesn’t want to return to the 48 Strongholds with him like this. She doesn’t want to bury him. She doesn’t want his mountain spirit, she wants him. She doesn’t want to scold him at all, she never wants to scold him again. She wishes she could undo all she had done, all these careless moments of crude dismissiveness, the little rejections when he teased her and smiled and played with his ponytail. She wishes she could have teased him back more, smiled and toed the line, made his cheeks burn like that time she forced her way into his room that night, armed with alcohol and a hand on his lightly-clothed knee.
She wishes she had kissed him already.
Or,
Zhou Fei remembers to take the pill given to her by Ying Hecong. When Xie Yun collapses, she doesn't.

Summary
There’s something lodged deep in Zhou Fei’s chest. Not all the time, no. But it’s there in the quiet moments when the sun rises and she wakes up to a deserted bed. When the sloshing water of Xie Yun washing in their bathtub is the water entering invading her ears and nostrils, her mouth. When the sun sets and she sits outside their quarters, looking around for enemies that will never come. The static nature of the 48 Strongholds stifles her. It’s too quiet, it’s too still. Shadows hide in the corners of her mother’s rooms and they smell of poison.

Zhou Fei is forced to deal with the ways her past trauma has changed her. Xie Yun is there to help.

“I’m ready,” he announces, stretching his arms like a starfish.
“Punch me in the leg to stop me,” she tells him seriously, although Xie Yun finds it somewhat difficult to smother his smile when her words sound slurred.
“You sound like you’re drunk,” he laughs, squeezing her thigh. “I won’t punch you.”
“Xie Yun.”
Xie Yun sighs. “Fine, I’ll punch you. Softly. More like a lover’s tap.”
Or,
Xie Yun realizes Zhou Fei is a vampire and employs every trick in the book to get her to bite him.

“I’ve already given half the book to Yin Hecong,” she tells him, rubbing a hand over his clothed thigh. “When we get back and get him the other half, he’ll have the cure figured out in no time.”
Xie Yun’s eyes flutter close. “Maybe.”
Zhou Fei cocks hear head. “Maybe?”
The ghost of a smile appears on Xie Yun’s pallid lips. “He really wants to study my corpse, maybe he’s misplaced the other half already.”
“Don’t say that,” Zhou Fei gasps, smacking him on the thigh.
“I’m joking, I’m joking,” Xie Yun murmurs, opening his eyes and squinting at her. “Heroine, don’t hit me. Don’t you pity this weak, dying scholar?”
Zhou Fei’s eyes burn. “Xie Yun.”
“A Fei,” he says, covering her hand with his and lacing his fingers over her own. “I’m just tired. I’m okay.”
“Can you sleep?” Zhou Fei asks, biting her lip. Her seashell bracelet digs into her wrist where Xie Yun’s pressing his cold hand against hers and it’s nothing but comforting.
“With a mighty guard watching over me?” Xie Yun responds, offering her a lopsided smile. “Of course.”

"Where are you t-taking me?" Leon demands, face flushing as he stutters. He can only imagine how rough his voice sounds after all that yelling. A tear trickles down his cheek, and the man grins, picking up his big hand and swiping it away. Leon cries out in protest, twisting away, but he can't escape the broad fingers that cup his cheek and turn his face back to centre.
The bag descends over his head a moment later, a helpless sob all Leon can manage before he's plunged back into shapeless darkness.
