OK. “Umm, I’m twenty-five. I’m staying over the hill in Camberwell. I went to art school.” Wei Ying tried to think of what else to say. It was a bit like dating. “I’m a bit of a hot mess actually, I’m sleeping on my brother’s sofa because I don’t have anywhere to live, and I haven’t had a meaningful relationship in like, forever.” He leaned forward and said behind his hand “I’m bi so it really shouldn’t be this difficult -.” He looked up to see they were both staring at him. That was good, he was keeping them engaged. “I love kids. They love me. Where’s yours, by the way?”
Lan Xichen turned to Nie Mingjue, but Nie Mingjue just stared back, apparently fascinated by Wei Ying. Lan Xichen turned back to look at Wei Ying again.
“We -. I wonder if -. Perhaps you can tell us a little about your - experience?” He smiled. “With - children.” He added.
“You can see from my CV I don’t really have any.” Wei Ying gave them a huge smile.

“Wangji.” His brother scolded. Lan Wangji felt the bite of his disapproval slice through his resolve.
“If I go -.” Wangji struggled to formulate the words. “It will be harder to argue -. If I don’t speak to him I don’t have to consider his proposition.”
Lan Xichen let go of his wrist, frowning. He smoothed his trousers. “Wangji.” He told him. “I know you think the world of your - plants -.” He waved his hand at Wangji, seemingly unable to complete a coherent sentence.
“Mn.” Wangji said.
“But this man has some very - novel ideas about the animal kingdom. People are - excited.”
Wangji didn’t like the way Xichen emphasised ‘excited’. It made him feel - not excited. Annoyed. Frustrated that no one seemed to understand the value of persistent, dedicated, detailed study rather than ‘exciting’ and preposterous theories. Also, it infuriated him that everyone considered animals to be so much more exciting than plants. In terms of diversity the former was barely a patch on the latter. “His theories are ridiculous.” Was what he told his brother. “I am not strategic.” Lan Wangji told him.
Xichen smiled. “But I am. And I am your brother.”

Wei Ying didn’t arrive at the house, it appeared in front of him. One moment he was driving through thick vegetation, the next, he was confronted with the expanse of a curling driveway and lawns leading to the most intimidating property he’d ever seen, in the darkness of the pre-dawn. It looked more organic than it should, a Gaudi-esque almost-living monument arising from the earth, all random windows and sharp edges, grey and dripping in the rain. A bolt of thunder highlighted its unearthly, beautiful ugliness in the sky above, bringing his attention to its quivering reflection in the lake below.
Wei Ying, a cleaner, has a new job for a mysterious gentleman in the middle of the forest. Mystery, hallucinations, sex, love and tentacles ensue.

Summary
A brief introduction/love letter to the fine art of fanfiction via a brief review of the fantastic piece of monster porn “Many Fox Given” by Defractum (nyargles) written for a friend. I think that this is a wonderful piece of fanfiction for multiple reasons, and used it as a primer to teach my romance writer best friend (of 32 years!!!) “how fan fiction functions,” and why what fanfic writers are doing is fascinating as an art form of communal storytelling- and why they are, on the whole, doing better, more complex writing than is found in most contemporary romance.
I texted her this screed at 3AM. That’s one hell of a text chain to wake up to 😅 I thought I’d share it here because, while I am not a writer, I am an inveterate reader, and have gotten so much joy out of this community of writers, so figured I would at least share my love and appreciation for the amazing work you are all doing!
