Nefer liked her standing. She enjoyed what she did and reveled in the connections and standing that her job and character gave her to the people of nod-krai. And, even if she wasn’t willing to say it out loud, her friends.
She liked being reliable, to be on the opposite end of the supplicant’s seat whenever a crisis knocked on their doors. But more than anything, she would hate to have her skills atrophy if she took a break, which is why, even in the aftermath of the rampage of two transcendent beings, having moon’s remnants chucked at her, surviving two assasination attempts and every second of logistic planning that she had spent countless sunny evenings by now instead of celebrating with her companions, even after all of that…
She never took a break.
As of now, she was standing on the far edge of that dreaded atrophy she tried to avoid by raising walls of work around her.
She was burnt out.

Steady and composed, Lauma walked over to Nefer, her every step deliberate. She raised her hand above Nefer's face, the silvery gleam of her blood catching the light in the dimness around them. Drops of blood flowed like rain in barren land, the promise of renewal and vitality imbued within them. Silver met brown as her blood mingled with Nefer's own. The blood dried in patches along Nefer's lower eyelid and cheek, the colour of rust - shiny, but faded. Nefer shuddered as the blood continued to drip but she remained still. She fought the tremors in her body and summoned every last ounce of energy to stay steady.
After the battle against Rerir, Nefer is left blind and dependent on Lauma’s care for her recovery. The event pulls the two women together, compelling them to face the undeniable closeness that neither can easily dismiss. As vulnerability slips through the cracks of the walls they've built between them, they find themselves drawn to each other in ways they thought had faded with time.

Nefer thinks she’s going to be sick. She grips the report in her hand so tightly that her fingers tremble and draw creases in the paper, and if it isn’t important evidence she’s sure she would have ripped it apart and thrown it into the air.
How could they do this to Lauma? How could they go after the one person that stood for nothing but peace and unity?
Lauma, targeted for her blood, has just barely been rescued from the Experimental Design Bureau.
Nefer refuses to confront her feelings, Lauma refuses to make it any easier for her, and the incident brings them closer than ever before.
