Then suddenly it’s the last Sunday before the new Hogwarts term starts and the night before Harry and Ron move into their flat and they’re all gathered around a long table in the garden at the Burrow for one last Sunday dinner and Seamus, Dean, Luna and Neville are there too and somehow miraculously things feel kind of good and people are kind of happy, everyone is chatting and laughing and enjoying life when Ron suddenly clears his throat as he stands up. Harry glances at Hermione who’s sat beside Ron, looking up at him encouragingly and lovingly and there’s a pang of something in Harry’s chest because he knows what this is, they’re about to finally be official and then everything will be exactly like Harry’s imagined, him with Ginny and Ron with Hermione because that’s what they’ve always been destined to become through all of this—
“I’m gay.”

“Captain,” Spock says carefully. “If you are insinuating something by your argument, it would be best to be direct.”
“Insinuating—!” Jim throws his hands in the air, and Spock very quickly gets the impression that he has made things much, much worse. “I’m not insinuating anything! Look, I mean it when I say it’s none of my business. You can find a nice Vulcan girl or something, I’m sure your dad would like that. Maybe Uhura will find somebody at a starbase, who knows? Certainly not up to me, is it?”
“And you?” Spock says quietly. Curiously, he finds himself dreading the answer.
Jim drains the last of his drink, grimacing as it goes down. He plays with the bottom of the cup against the table, twirling it on its edge. He refuses to meet Spock’s eyes, glaring into the grain of the wood. Finally, he speaks. “I don’t think that concerns you,” he says icily.
Something deep in Spock’s throat expands.

Summary
This is how it goes: they get on each other’s nerves, McCoy takes Spock for a spin in his quarters, and they return to business as usual on the Enterprise. McCoy keeps the med bay functioning, and Spock does—whatever it is that First Officers do. They don’t talk about work (or much of anything) much, once McCoy gets his hands on Spock behind closed doors.
The most important thing that McCoy tells himself, though, is that Spock isn’t his. He’s never been his—he’s Jim’s, at the end of the day. They’re the happy ending everyone’s rooting for. He’s just a bit selfish, reaping the benefits of their occasional break ups.
But that’s not really it, is it?
