    “It’s too early in the day for you to be this drunk, even if it is your birthday. Where are you?” He could almost see her shaking her head and reaching for her keys to jump in the car and come find him.

    “I’m not drunk, I just hate it here. And I can’t go back to Boston because of the limits on my stupid fucking visa. So I’m brainstorming ways that I could get out of here sooner rather than later. What do you say, marry me?” She was silent on the other end of the line. He was about to let out a “haha just kidding” when he heard her inhale.

    “You know, it’s not the stupidest idea you’ve ever had.”
