“Hmm.” His Master mused. “Now that it’s woken up, it won’t be able to return into its cryogenic chamber. It’s useless to me in that weakened state. I suppose I will have to make a new one.” He stated. “Specimen, dispose of it.”
He visibly twitched. His heart started pounding in his ears. The shouts from the others faded from his mind as all he could hear now was ringing. The small one’s head tilted up, her big eyes staring right into his own.
He had to move. He had to obey. But he-
“Specimen.” His Master said.
And suddenly the noises were back. Too loud. He forced a step towards her. Then another. His body was stiff, his fist closed so tight his knuckles were turning white.
He kneeled in front of her. Her head moved to watch him. He placed his hands around her shoulders. He was shaking. Why was he shaking? This was just a mission. Why couldn’t he do this?
He pressed her shoulder harder, squeezing her lungs together. She was so small. So very small.
“Don’t ya fucking dare, ya monster!” The red one yelled.
She yelped.

When he gets back from his brief getaway in another universe, Peter feels different. Hopeful and motivated, his brain is racing with plans even before he’s pulled himself out of his universe’s giant, fallen shield-free version of New York Harbor. By the time he’s back to his undecorated, barely furnished studio apartment, he’s composed a to-do list in his head. It’s not specific enough to be called a plan—just goals, small and large, mostly vague, probably all of them too ambitious—but Peter feels good today, high off a fight that ended well and a comradery he hasn’t had in years. He’s sad it was all over so quickly, but he’s home now, feeling alive. Feeling ready.
Peter knows, with a certainty he’s never felt before, that his life could be different.
