"No, I'm sorry, I just..." Vi paused, her breath catching in her throat. She looked at Caitlyn. "I didn't realize. That it was my birthday today, I mean. I guess I-" Forgot? Didn't know? Let it slip my mind? The words sounded wrong, and using them almost made it sound like there was something wrong with Vi.
“You didn’t know it was your birthday?” Caitlyn asked, this time quietly.

Vi knows that her birthday is December 19. In theory. But when you spend several years locked up in a place where it doesn't matter what day it is, things like birthdays quickly slip your mind.
Luckily for Vi, there is one person in her life who would never forget her birthday.

Vi’s response to that is to slide down into the water until she’s fully submerged. Caitlyn laughs. She laughs.
After a moment, Vi comes up for air. The shampoo has left her hair, and whilst the black hasn’t completely washed out, scarlet peaks through the void like sunrise, and Vi seems all the brighter for it. She slicks her hair back out of her eyes, and Caitlyn hates how much the make-up smudged around the powder blue really does add character.

Vi cranes her neck to look at her once more. It’s just at the same moment that Caitlyn is pulling the cloth down her neck and over her collarbone. She watches Vi’s gaze catch on the movement, watches her lips slip open. Caitlyn’s hand stills.
And then she takes a chance.

Vi rolls onto her side, knees tucked up to her chest. She wiggles her phone free from where it'd been digging into her hip and pulls up her texts with Caitlyn without thinking.
She squints at the cracked, too bright screen as her thumbs hover uselessly over the keyboard, trying and failing to string together anything resembling an intelligent or charming sentence.
Something close to shame rises in Vi's chest. It was the middle of the night and here she was on the verge of saying something stupid like, you up?

Summary
Cait takes a sip of her drink, and Vi does so similarly. The voices of fate beckon to Caitlyn in her feeble state, urging her that she could be sipping liquid gold instead if she only listened to their guidance.
Caitlyn considers. She’s not usually one to take outside advice, but she’s had a rough couple of days, and figures that Vi probably needs this as much as she does. She relents. In her burnt-out delirium, Caitlyn guides Vi’s head into her lap.
“Dude, what-”
A soft thumb runs along the curve of Vi’s forehead.
“What’d he do?” Caitlyn interrupts. She doesn’t have the bandwidth to explain what’s happening or why.

The tattooed burglar swung her legs over the balcony railing with confident, graceful movement and turned so that she was facing Caitlyn.
“Thanks again for not shooting me,” she said with a crooked smile.
Caitlyn felt her breath hitch ever so slightly at how handsome this burglar was and prayed that the other woman hadn’t heard it.
“Thanks for potentially saving my dissertation,” she replied.
There was an awkward pause and Caitlyn got the bizarre feeling that the woman didn’t actually want to leave. Caitlyn was surprised that she didn’t want her to leave, either. It lasted only a moment before the stranger lowered herself down partially. She looked up at Caitlyn one more time with a more serious expression.
“You should lock your balcony. The next burglar may not be as nice.”

Caitlyn fell silent, settling in for the wait as Vi gleefully got her digs in. The Zaunite was traipsing into dangerous territory, all but gambolling about in her crosshairs. She seemed terribly pleased with herself–far too pleased with herself.

The spotlight refocused, and the performer emerged. The figure striding out from the curtain was not a drag queen but a drag king. He was average in height, a few inches shorter than Caitlyn, and roughly her age. His vivid pink side-cut was combed and slicked back. He wore a vintaged red and black motorcycle jacket over a white shirt, with pin-striped pants. Motorcycle boots with something of a steampunk motif completed the outfit. He struck a disco pose, isolating her hips skillfully and jerking them to the beat.
He spun around on his heel, popped the collar on his leather jacket, and launched into motion: Strutting, dipping and swaying purposefully toward Caitlyn with a gleeful spark in his eyes. Surely, he had mortified many a woman on her birthday.
What happens when the dude dominating the dance floor happens to be a babe backstage?
Finding herself at a drag show on her birthday, the wealthiest heiress in Piltover becomes taken with a struggling ex-con who intends to give her the best birthday of her life.

When she gets the chance to flee to the other side of the country in Zaun, all she can see is promise. With a rare jolt of spontaneity, she packs her bags and hops on the plane to ZAX, where she’s sure to find her delightful best friend Jayce and his small but well-designed apartment awaiting her arrival.
Except that when she lands on the other side of the country with nearly everything she owns shoved in two oversized suitcases, Jayce has some news: he’s moving out, with his brand new fling, to another city entirely. Oh, and he found her a roommate.
Or, Caitlyn finds herself on the other side of the country, alone, with a pink haired roommate with an attitude problem and one hell of a job.
Vi does porn. Professionally.
And fuck if Cait’s not sucked right into Vi’s aura.
