“Speaking of, where is your crazy lover? I thought he would be here with you.” Feng Xin asks.
“…” Xie Lian says. “What do you mean? Hua Cheng was dispersed. He hasn’t returned yet.”
His heart aches, but he knows what they’re implying. That Hua Cheng is back. And he hasn’t come to see him.
What if he doesn’t want to see him? Xie Lian quickly shoves that thought into the recesses of his brain.
“…Your Highness.” Feng Xin begins slowly.
“What are you talking about?” Mu Qing snaps.

His mind clears of any thoughts and concerns, there is only Xie Lian’s face pressed into his chest, buried in his robes, his beloved’s long hair cascading down his own back, falling against his legs. There is only the solid weight of his body fitting against him like it is where he belongs (even if the mere thought has Hua Cheng feeling inadequate).
