“Hey,” said Mo Xuanyu. “You — I think you were having a bad dream.”
Lan Wangji closed his eyes, shuddering again. His cheeks were wet. His chest ached. It had been years since he’d had one of these dreams, and he’d always been alone. To be seen like this was unbearable.

“A ghost brings fortune? First time I’m hearing about. Call me intrigued. What’s so special about the ghost? Only if you are allowed to share, that is.”
He isn’t allowed to share. He doesn’t care. He wants Wei Ying to know. “A ghost used to visit the Cloud Recesses Gate every year for two thousand years. It waited in front of the gate all night, vanished with the first rays of light. After every visit, the Cloud Recesses had been renewed.”

Emet-Selch rose at last to join his friend’s side. His gaze cast beyond the window where the Azem-familiar yet explored the gardens of Anagnorisis, most visibly elated and astonished by the sight of a simple, dour-looking and grey bird.
He sighed and threw his hands up in a shrug. “Where would you like me to begin?”

This wouldn't have happened if he were doing a night hunt on a mountain, or in the woods, or even by a river and hunting down a water ghoul. He'd be fine, and probably back in Koi Tower already, instead of pinned down by rocks and shivering from the damp cold in the cave.

Summary
Wei Wuxian fell... and landed on a sidewalk 600 years in the future. Right in front of Lan Zhan and Lan Xichen, modern cultivators on their way home from a cultivation conference.
A surprising amount of historical information has been lost to time - some due to natural destruction, some due to rampant revisionism. In particular, the true identity of the Yiling Laozu has been erased from history, with no sect willing to claim him and everyone eager to hide any ties they once had to him.
As Wei Ying helps the Lans fill in the missing pieces of history, Lan Zhan knows there are things he’s not telling them. He also knows that it doesn’t matter what those secrets are; nothing will keep him from standing at Wei Ying’s side.
Eventually, Wei Wuxian has to face the fact that he can’t correct some of history’s most important oversights without coming clean about his identity. Proving to the world that he is who he says he is takes them to Lanling, where they unearth history even he didn’t know about.

“Seems like it worked,” says a nearby voice. There’s a faint undercurrent of excitement in it, bordering on glee. Like a child about to get a red packet for the New Year.
Wei Wuxian looks in the direction of the speaker with a flinch, the light streaming in from the entryway momentarily blinding. He barely manages to stay upright, holding the bleeding arm close to his middle and balancing on the other.
What the fuck is happening?
“I guess he wasn’t so useless after all,” a second voice says. This one is calmer, and familiar to him. His eyes lock onto Jin Guangyao’s ever-pleasant face, then note the punk hanging back half a step behind him, grinning wide and looking a little manic.
“Welcome back, Yiling Laozu,” Jin Guangyao says.
