Summary
Wandering through the honey-warm light of the Upper Highlands, sun catching in the grass like spilled glass, asking strangers about a mage he barely remembers from the First-Class Mage Exam. Two of 18 in the final round ... and neither made the cut.
After vague directions and lots of bowing, he finds a farm: white picket fences, the smell of soil, and wind. He passes the gate, and if it wasn’t obvious there was a mage here, the floating pumpkins should do it.
And there he is.
Tall, lanky, handsome, crouched in soil, staff in hand, dressed in usual farmer grab, wheat strand in his mouth. And distractingly tantalizing proportions that—
"Oi! Lost or something? Shoo!" the man barks.
Ricky fumbles with the letter. "Uh—Gyuvin? Kim Gyuvin?"
At the sight of the letter, the man sighs.
Or:
Shen “Ricky” Quanrui failed the Mage Exam, left with a commendation and bruised ego. Now he’s wandering the West Highlands, chasing a mage he barely recalls, for a mission neither understands.
How hard could it be?
(Answer: Extremely. Especially when your partner’s a hot farm-boy mage with the attitude of a puppy left out in the rain.)
