Summary
The Ural Mountains belong to the wolves first. Give them space and they keep it in exchange. But Evgeni is stuck. Frozen. Pale eyes pin him in place, and he can feel his heart within his chest. He knows to back away; slowly turn, and retreat. He knows what to do but he’s not doing it.
The wolf is small, with pale and wiry fur. It just looks at Evgeni, and for a brief moment it feels like something brushes the back of his mind. Evgeni swallows as he feels it again; neurons in unused pathways in his mind; a phantom spark; pack sense.

In hindsight, Eric should’ve figured it out sooner. The signs are all there. When he decides to go to Samwell, he assumes the ‘one in four; maybe more’ means something significantly different. At least it's not a cult. He hopes.
