Benvolio wasn’t totally sure what went on in Mercutio’s bedroom, and, to be fair, he never wanted to be. He could always hear muffled noises through their shared wall, the occasional bump and shout, but never anything discernible—a mercy for him, who spent half the night slumped in front of his textbooks, trying desperately to cram in everything he should’ve started studying the week before. So, when people on campus asked him about Mercutio’s latest escapade, he could be genuine with his ignorance. I’m not sure, he’d say, painfully aware of the fact that Mercutio would be sneaking up right behind him, ready to grab him by the shoulders and blissfully announce: Just look for the man with scratches all the way down his back or the lady whose legs shake whenever she stands.
