His eyes were down when he spoke, as usual, but they flicked up to find Ilya’s after a moment. “Um. I know it’s early, but I have a birthday gift for you. Well,” Shane bit his lip. “It’s not, like, a gift, I guess. Not physical.” 

    Ilya’s eyebrows raised, and he painted on a curious smile, pointing at his chest. 

    “For me? A gift?”

    “I am not,” Ilya retorted. “I am doing nice stuff like taking him out to eat yesterday,” he reminded her, though he'd already recounted the day before via text. “We’re going out to dinner tomorrow, too. For Christmas. And I will pay. Again.”

    “That’s good, keep doing that,” Svetlana sounded genuine. “You’re taking initiative, Ilya!”

    “Yes, exactly, thank you,” Ilya nodded. “Say more things like that.”

    Did the Harvard dorms completely shut down over the winter break? What about the dining hall? Shane supposed he didn’t really know. He’d never stuck around to find out, when he was younger. 

    “Okay?” 

    Coach raised his eyebrows. “So, he’s staying with you.” 

    Shane’s eyes went wide. 

    “What?” 

    “Come on, Captain,” Wiebe looked down his nose at Shane. “Try not to look too thrilled.”
