Summary
"Can I help you?" she calls out, softly so as not to alert anyone in the house, but curtly enough to let the stranger know the intrusion is noted and unwanted.
The girl blinks insolently back at her. There's something of the obsequiousness of her father's silences when confronted with unexpected authority in her lack of reply, and the aspect of a wolf in her stare.
She must be very hungry.

Summary
You don't sleep – can't sleep. The hollowed out crevices of your mind swim with a mulch-stew of half-memories. The knowledge of the atrocities your past self must've wrought grates against the great, yearning absence that is everything before the crash.
For one brief, glorious moment there had been nothing in your ruined head other than relief – the joy of knowing it was all over, that you'd never be capable of killing again. But there was a purpose to your suffering still; and a chance at redemption, offered as though you'd already won it.

Summary
"Have you slept?" he asks. Enjolras's shoulders shift, almost imperceptibly; the tension in them changes as his posture regains its usual firmness. "Have you stopped at all since Prairial?"
"That's not your concern."

Summary
Men like Enjolras belonged in books: those of ancient history, once the uglier facets of reality had been dulled by a forgiving editorial hand, or in poetry; in myths and legends that were by design exemplary, idealised projections, their heroes far too perfect to be wrought of anything but paper and ink.
If Cupid had struck Grantaire with an arrow of gold, he had surely struck Enjolras with an arrow of lead.
-
Grantaire invites Enjolras into his studio, beginning a slow but profound shift in their relationship.

"I want to throw a party. Nothing big, just our friends, but I want it to be special. I'd like to decorate the backroom of the Musain – not with Santas and snowmen and the like. Something different. Something… classy."
Grantaire almost inhales his beer. "You came to me for classy?"

Summary
He wondered if he should feel guilty, about the rush of feelings seeing Jimmy had bought back, though they'd never truly left, tucked away in a small, secret part of him. He knew Richard sometimes had other lovers, and wouldn't begrudge him the same. Neither of them expected the other to live like a nun for the three hundred and fifty-odd days a year they were at opposite ends of the country. But Jimmy isn't a lover, he reminded himself, never was and never will be.

Summary
There's no emotion in the look Enjolras gives him at all beyond recognition, yet it still pierces Grantaire through like a lepidopterist's pin through the body of a specimen; a knife thrust through two years of separation that brings the entire complex whirl of feelings he's been suppressing for the last two months to the fore.
There's no doubt about it: he's still got it bad.
-

Summary
It's not unusual for men to keep a diary here, though there's little enough to write about most days. It passes the time, and gives some form to the otherwise indistinguishable days and nights. Perhaps he's writing a letter to his family, or to his sweetheart - he seems the type to have a woman waiting for him back home, quiet and unassuming and ordinary.
Except the lines he forms with his words don't have the shape of a love letter to them; they have the shape of poetry.

Summary
Courfeyrac cuts a careful path through the crowd, clutching his cane and two drinks in the circle of his hands. He feels more than a little overdressed – if there's another top hat anywhere in the room, it is not on its owner's head, but he isn't willing to let his own hat out of his sight in such rough and ready company.

Summary
Courfeyrac has never been in love. He has had flirtations – far too many to count – and entanglements that have meant much to him, but he has never felt the kind of thought-consuming passion that he has witnessed drive reasonable men to distraction, to obsession, to spill poetry in praise of a beloved object before they’ve so much as learned its name.
When infatuation comes for him, it takes an unexpected form.

Summary
Enjolras takes a breath, and voices his request in one long, unbroken sentence, before he succeeds in talking himself out of it: "I would like you to spar with me – not practise bâton de combat or savate, but to fight as they do on the streets or in the alleys behind gambling dens; I wish to improve my capabilities in fighting unarmed."
"You'll have to specify which streets; I need to be certain I haven't grasped the wrong end of the stick on this occasion," Grantaire jests, predictably.

Summary
What had begun as impassioned talk of the possibilities Lamarque's funeral presented to them had, seemingly without conscious decision from either of them, progressed into kissing on the couch, and thenceforth into Enjolras slipping out of Combeferre's grasp and onto his knees before him.

Summary
It had been two years since he left Downton, since he and Thomas said goodbye, and one year since he found his feet again and started working here. The bar was exclusive, secluded, and attracted an eclectic clientele, but on a Wednesday night it was practically deserted.
